We have been quite busy today…. we have managed to just about finish the to-do list, which is always a good thing! I am posting a tutorial for Mom, because Jessica and I have been making Jar Lid Covers for canning jars.

If you would like to make some, I have posted the directions here for your personal usage.

First you gather your materials which will be:

Scissors
Fabric
Pencil
Sewing Thread
1/4″ wide elastic, 7″ for wide mouth jars, and 6″ for regular mouth jars.

Sewing Machine
Trim(opt.)

—————————————–
Iron your fabric.

Now trace with your pencil 8″ circles for wide mouth jars, and 7″ for regular mouth jars unto your fabric. We used a kitchen bowl for the template to mark the pattern on our fabric, which worked very well.

Cut out your circles.

Okay, you can either use pinking shears to cut around your circles to make the zig-zagged design, or you can sew rick-rack, trims, or lace around the circle.

Time to put on the elastic! Take your circle, and iron it in half, then iron it in half again, to mark your circle into 4 creases. Fold your elastic into 4 creases as well. Match the elastic and the fabric crease lines together, and stitch down with a zig-zag stitch all the way around, until the elastic meets at the end.

Here is what it looks like when you skip the folding step:

Once you have attached the elastic, you can also sew buttons, patches, or another small decorative item on the top of your circle. I tied a ribbon around some of the jar covers I made, and glued the ribbon in place.

You are finished!!

I made 6, one for each of the watermelon preserves we made.

Happy stitching!!
